Canadian Adventurer Charles-Antoine Lanthier Summits Mount Everest Less Than Eight Months After Stage 4 Cancer Remission
KATHMANDU, NEPAL — May 16, 2026 — Canadian adventurer and cancer survivor Charles-Antoine Lanthier successfully summited Mount Everest on May 13, 2026, completing a remarkable journey from stage 4 Hodgkin’s lymphoma to the top of the world in less than eight months from official remission, and under ten months after finishing chemotherapy.
Lanthier reached the 8,848-meter summit at 10:48 a.m. Nepal Time via the classic South Col route as part of an expedition led by renowned Nepalese mountaineer Mingma G and organized by Imagine Nepal. His team was among the first climbers to reach the summit during the 2026 Everest season, slightly over an hour after summit ropes were fixed.
The climb marked the culmination of “The Stage 4 to Camp 4 Project,” a fundraising initiative supporting The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada. As of summit day, the campaign had raised $9,624 for blood cancer research, surpassing its original $8,848 goal — one dollar for every meter of Everest’s elevation.
“Cancer was the hardest mountain I’ve ever faced,” said Lanthier. “Standing on the summit of Everest was emotional, but this journey was never only about climbing a mountain. It was about proving that life even so soon after cancer can still hold extraordinary challenges, purpose, and adventure.”
Diagnosed on New Year’s Eve 2024 with stage 4 Hodgkin’s lymphoma, Lanthier underwent six months of chemotherapy before being declared cancer-free in October 2025. Following treatment, he committed himself to intensive physical rehabilitation and mountaineering training in preparation for Everest.
The summit push began at 1:30 a.m. from Camp 4, with Lanthier reaching the summit after approximately 9 hours and 15 minutes of climbing. The full round-trip from high camp lasted roughly 13 hours.
“This project became much bigger than me,” Lanthier added. “The support from friends, family, donors, fellow survivors, and complete strangers carried me every step of the way. They made this possible. I only touched the summit.”
Throughout the expedition, Lanthier documented his experience to raise awareness about cancer survivorship, resilience, and the importance of community support during treatment and recovery.
Lanthier also acknowledged the support of expedition sponsor Douglas Mattress, whose partnership supported his recovery and preparation throughout the project.
